Is there a hard tail in the Coma Cluster X-ray spectrum?

چکیده

We report results from a re-analysis of the BeppoSAX observation of Coma and from the analysis of a second, yet unpublished observation of the same object. From our re-analysis of the first observation we find that the statistical evidence for a hard tail is about 2σ. From the analysis of the second observation which, thanks to the lower background and the longer exposure time, is characterized by a larger signal to noise we find no evidence for a hard tail. From the upper limit on the flux of the hard tail, using the standard Inverse Compton formulae, we derive a lower limit for the magnetic of ∼ 0.2− 0.4 μGauss consistent with Faraday rotation measurements.

The Coma Cluster hard X - ray spectrum revisited : still no evidence for a hard tail

In this note, we reply to Fusco-Femiano et al. 2004 (FF04) and Fusco-Femiano et al. 2006 (FF06), who cast doubts on our analysis of the PDS observations of the Coma Cluster which we describe in Rossetti & Molendi 2004 (RM04). We discuss the main issues in FF06 and we confirm that the available data do not allow to firmly establish the presence of a non-thermal component in the hard X-ray spectr...

ar X iv : a st ro - p h / 99 01 01 8 v 1 4 J an 1 99 9 Hard X - ray Radiation in the Coma Cluster Spectrum

Hard X-ray radiation has been detected for the first time in the Coma cluster by Beppo-SAX . Thanks to the unprecedented sensitivity of the Phoswich Detection System (PDS) instrument, the source has been detected up to ∼80 keV. There is clear evidence (4.5σ) for non-thermal emission in excess of thermal above ∼25 keV. The hard excess is very unlikely due to X Comae, the Seyfert 1 galaxy present...

Hard X-Ray Emission from the Galaxy Cluster A2256.

After the positive detection by BeppoSAX of hard X-ray radiation up to approximately 80 keV in the Coma Cluster spectrum, we present evidence for nonthermal emission from A2256 in excess of thermal emission at a 4.6 sigma confidence level. In addition to this power-law component, a second nonthermal component already detected by ASCA could be present in the X-ray spectrum of the cluster, which ...

On the thermal origin of the hard X-ray emission from the Coma cluster

We analyze the origin of the hard X-ray flux from the Coma cluster observed by the Beppo-SAX satellite. This flux is typically assumed to be produced by nonthermal particles accelerated in the Coma medium. We show, however, that in the case of in-situ acceleration of particles from the thermal pool, the hard X-rays in the range of Beppo-SAX observations (30−80 keV) are generated by bremsstrahlu...

Nonthermal hard X-ray excess in the Coma cluster: resolving the discrepancy between the results of different PDS data analyses

The detection of a nonthermal excess in the Coma cluster spectrum by two BeppoSAX observations analyzed with the XAS package (Fusco-Femiano et al. ) has been disavowed by an analysis (Rossetti & Molendi) performed with a different software package (SAXDAS) for the extraction of the spectrum. To resolve this discrepancy we reanalyze the PDS data considering the same software used by Rossetti & M...
